According to The Migraine Trust, a migraine is "the most common and disabling neurological disorder in the UK". They also state that Migraine with Brainstem aura (also known as Basilar Migraine) is an "unusual and rare subtype",
I realised a few years ago that others would have been diagnosed with the same condition and decided to set up a Facebook Support Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/bamsupport/ and now have over 100 members to date all suffering in varying degrees of severity. This has proven useful as a lot of the members have said they thought they were alone.
One member who lives in the USA stated "I'm glad I found this page. I've been trying to reach acceptance of my situation for 5 years"
Research shows that the condition affects women more than men; about 15 of the Facebook members are men.
The condition has no age boundary and little research is being carried out at present. Symptoms vary too and some of these are listed below:
- hearing problems
- tinnitus (ringing in the ears)
- speech difficulties - slurred or confusion of words
- visual difficulties in both eyes
- temporary blindness
- cold hands or feet
